What is the soul in art?
SOUL such a wonderfully complex and treasured part of our inheritance as humans.
There are 5 needs of the soul being highlighted in this exhibition. While we journey through the Gallery we’ll be invited to conect to each of them and allow our own souls to take a deep dive into our own needs.
Each one of the artists is presenting artwork that involves a specific need of the soul.
Dr.Caroline Leaf defines the mind as the sum of will, emotion and choice that produce actions. To will, to feel, to choose.
Religion can define the soul;
Psychology and Philosophy also define the soul.
Art though, has a different relation to the soul. Art is not limited in its interaction or observation: Artists explore the soul, as a way of expressing, as a general trend towards awareness and discovery of the soul. But where do we find the soul in art?
Can we find it in the pictorial gesture, styles, or trends? In vivid colors? In deep thought conceputalist? In broad and powerful concepts such as light, experiment or the moment of amazement or shock culture? Where can we find the soul?
The soul is somewhere in the artist, that is certain. But how the artist manages to weave it in the surface or core of her/his art is another question. Are we able to make the soul visible in art? Michelangelo studied and drew to perfection to represent the human body in the most complex and emotional movements.
This extraordinary attention to anatomy created a moment of amazement that involved the soul of the viewer. So was Leonardo da Vinci. So were other great artists. We think of art through the prism of names, but is art related to people’s names? The soul thus ends up being represented in art through individual people. We see that artificial intelligence is more recently producing art. We know that the “machine” does not possess a soul, yet it learns to mirror the needs of the human soul. If it were a human we would call this a toxic behaveour. We can trace the soul in the stages preceding to art collecting. We can distinguish even here particular ways of acquiring it, each showing what hangs in the collector’s soul when they acquire a work of art. If we follow Caroline Leaf’s definition, then the choice is connected with the will, emotion and thought.
Choosing a work can mean a better investment, a deep feeling or a reflection on the history of art. The soul in some definitions relating to Mozaic thinkers and Christian writings is rather a way of describing the person, in the set of features that best define, that individ
